Staffing for the ICF-MRs and for home and community based services is done 24 hours per day to provide the supervision and supports needed by the residents. Staff to resident ratio maintains a balance to provide the highest quality of care. Our staff includes nurses, direct care workers, maintenance/laundry/housekeeping, dietary and administrative personnel. Staff and residents work together to create a family-like atmosphere amid the daily routine of work, activities, and individual program plans. In keeping with our commitment to provide quality care to our residents, the following is included as part of the comprehensive employment application and hiring practice. Additionally, orientation and continued training is required for all personnel in the areas of abuse and neglect.


Pre-employment screening: this includes a personal interview designed to assist in determining the applicant's method of interaction, problem resolution, stress management and discipline philosophies. Personal and professional references (3 each) will be contacted.

Criminal Background check: a criminal background check, through the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, will be conducted on all newly hired persons. In addition, a background check through the Federal Bureau of Investigation will be conducted on any person who does not provide us with proof of Ohio residency for the past five years prior to employment. Hartville Homes, Inc. will not regularly employ any individual who has pled guilty, no contest to, or has been convicted of any offense listed in Senate Bill 160, or any similar offense in another state, in either state or federal court, unless in its sole discretion, Hartville Homes, Inc. chooses to employ the applicant pursuant to the personal character standards adopted by the Director of Health.

Check of ODMR/DD Abuser Registry: Hartville Homes, Inc. shall make inquiry to the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Disabilities to determine whether newly hired individuals names appear on the Abuser Registry. This will be completed according to the procedure established and maintained by the department. No unsupervised direct client contact will be permitted for any employee until it has been determined that the individual's name does not appear on the registry and documented in the employee's personnel file.

Check of Ohio Nurse Aide Registry: Hartville Homes, Inc. shall make inquiry to the Ohio Department of Health to inquire whether the nurse aide registry established under section 3721.32 of the Revised Code reveals that its director has made a determination of abuse, neglect or misappropriation of property of a resident of a long-term facility or residential care facility by the person. No unsupervised direct client contact will be permitted for any employee until it has been determined that the individual's name is either listed in good standing or not listed at all.

Orientation and Training: initial training for newly hired employees includes, but is not limited to: behavior support techniques, Resident Rights, OSHA, policies and procedures, safety and abuse/neglect. In addition, each employee having regular, direct contact with residents are required to participate in in-service training annually including: abuse/neglect, resident rights, OSHA, fire safety and disaster.
